Turducken

We’re cutting out strips of concrete floor, prior to digging trenches for drains and other utilities. I believe we mentioned previously that under the slab in the kitchen area (6″ thick, not 4″) lies 4″ of insulation and another 6″ thick slab. Because of the thickness, we had to rent a bigger saw. After cutting and lifting out the first slab on a branch, we pulled up the insulation and saw:

Why, yes, that *is* a manhole cover. It covers an old interceptor or the like; it is disused and dry. There’s no way I’m cutting that thing out of there- I think we can weasel a 2″ drain past it. Across the way, where the bathrooms are going, under the second slab we found several inches of cork. When I started digging, I heard the distinctive CLINK! of shovel on concrete. A third slab, sounded out at 3″ thick. Our contractor, Luke Orlins, had the best take: “You have the turducken of floors.”
